Is drinking water from plastic bottles bad for you?

40 posts in this topic

I plan to replace all of my drinking water with glass bottles for sustainability, but I am also curious if drinking from the plastic ones is actually harmful.

Do they leak microplastics into the water, and are there any other potential concerns besides that?

Many studies show that microplastics are everywhere. So yeah, you should avoid plastic where possible.

Best thing is to install an RO system in your place. It will pay for itself in a few years.

@Leo Gura yeah, I remember you talking about RO. Unfortunately, I don't have the money for it at the moment. Besides, I am renting.

If they are everywhere, then are they even possible to avoid? And will a small decrease in their consumption help that much?

I always use my own filtered water in a stainless steel bottle but last week I forgot it at home & had to buy bottled water. Better than being dehydrated all day or drinking tap if you ask me. Once in a while at least.

@Rigel are you using reverse osmosis system, as Leo suggested or some other filter?

You can buy a table-top RO system which doesn't require drilling holes in your kitchen.

You are wasting money just driving to the store to buy water.

Not entirely, but since we drink so much water all the time, it's wise to make that source as clean as possible. Water sustains your life.

Because of their weight, glass bottles are considered less sustainable than plastic (considering both are recycled).
Both contain microplastics. Glass contains a bit less hormones.

I drink tap water, it saves so much energy, I love it!

It is well monitored here but most likely it contains microplastics and hormones as well (and more).

Of course you have to be nice to the water, so that it changes it's structure to be healthy.

Just joking :P

I drink my water from public urinals with a bamboo straw.

Very sustainable.

Very inspiring, I can feel the climate getting colder by the minute!

Fossils all over the world celebrate, now that they can finally rest in peace.

I have switched to a berkey filtration system & I love it. They seem to claim heavy metal removal although I haven't looked into 3rd party testing or anything. I can attest to chlorine removal from smell & taste comparison pretty easily. I don't know about the micro plastic. Probably removes some of it. I would hope.

I assume reverse osmosis would be a good choice. Never had any water coming out of that.

You can drink from a steel bottle. Or just pour in yiiur ceramic and find a lid to cover it.

Why? That sounds like bs. Plastic is never fully recyclable and recycling of plastic itself is bad for the environment.

I don't see what's the issue with the glass bottles.

Do you have any sources for this? This is the first time I am hearing about hormones. Why w I uld tgey be there and and how does bottle material influence it?

@Something Funny BPA. It gets into your body and behaves like estrogen.

If you don't believe me just google it. I didn't meassure this stuff myself.

My RO system has a remineralization stage. It doesn't cost much extra.

@Leo Gura do you have any tips on choosing the good RO system?

Are there any specific paramaters to consider?
