Depression and consciousness

8 posts in this topic

Has anyone noticed that with increased consciousness there is the potential to feel more deeply depressed in certain situations?

Not that this is bad as I find it’s alert system that tells me when I am disconnected highlighting a need to change but sometimes the depression can be quite acute for short periods. A walk in nature helps

On the flip side my confidence levels and general feeling of ease in life is pretty high. It’s almost like there is a not giving a fuck about things like I used to. There’s a sense I do not need though I may only want what life has to offer

Depression has many causes and being "conscious" isn't one of them. Depression calls for understanding, what's causing the depression? Sometimes one has to examine expectations about life, improve health habits, enhance self-esteem, and other times it calls for an improvement in quality of life. For deep depression, it's usually all of the above.

That said, when one starts do deal with impermanence, no self, and dukkha on the spiritual path they are likely to fall into some type of depression. It's brought on by insight but usually ego will misinterpret those insights. In a way it's progress but to stay stuck in misery is ego. What's required is a more mature perspective.

This is a good video that explains this same situation, the questioner asks Sadhguru "With Increased Awareness and Sensitivity, I see more of the suffering going on in the world and it makes me suffer", his answer is priceless and brilliant!

Karma Means "Life is my Making", I am 100% responsible for my Inner Experience. -Sadhguru..."I don''t want Your Dreams to come True, I want something to come true for You beyond anything You could dream of!!" - Sadhguru

Seems to be the case in some ways. As examples:

  • Deconstructing reality may temporarily undermine your sense of meaning
  • Dropping what's false can be painful when one is attached to it

Take a look into depression. It is a way of holding or imagining a negative future for yourself.

Do the following:

  1. Imagine a negative future for your self and life for 5 minutes.
  2. Imagine a positive future for your self and life for 5 minutes.
  3. Notice the difference in effects. What occurred in your experience?

I'd add that, if the results are negative, we have yet to go all the way into our contemplation; it is usually because there's still something we're unaware of. What also occurs as a result of the work are feelings of unprecedented joy, clarity and freedom, so what the hell?

Almost nobody wants to really wake up, aka return to heaven and be one with their brothers, so yeah the higher you go the more likely you're really alone in this world even all the spiritual people you can't connect with.

Technically I shouldn't be complaining about this situation, but if I don't then nobody will ever know about this situation.

It’s just a feeling of being unsatisfied. What once satisfied me doesn’t now. I want more out of life

interestingly today I have been speaking with a good friend of mine. He’s an artist and we have discussed starting a community interest company (CIC) - this is a UK social enterprise type thing no idea what US equivalent is. This CIC we want to impact the world and help alleviate the dysfunctions we both see.

I thanked the universe for this. It has opened me to this possibility alongside my company.

It’s this shit that connects and elevates. I’m highly ambitious I have to do things that are impactful and can change the world

Sounds nice, that kind of thing can be challenging without some initial capital/funding and/or partnership. Hopefully you have some connections to help you get started.
