TikTok is crack

65 posts in this topic

Finally mustered the courage to delete that hell bent app. It sucked so much time and energy out of me. The app is such a drain and you get nothing back from it.💨

My algorithm gives me mostly sexy girls doing sexy dances and some weird animal videos, squishing pimples, accidents and weird phenomena. And from time to time, like 5% of the time some educational content. 🇨🇳

In China children don’t get this kind of content. What do you guys get? I asked some guys and they get similar horny content. It is the same garbage. 🗑️

If you can use TikTok only for 5 minutes per day it is ok. For me that is not possible when I’m stressed. Yesterday I watched it for one hours in total.  💀

I used it years ago, and it mostly showed me traditional male types being misogynistic, preachers or brainwashed people preaching about religion, how "westerners" are "sick" and "deluded" or "conspiracy theories", and a little bit of educational content or entertainment that got criticized for being out of religious or traditional norms. Sometimes also the things you mentioned.

I also created videos for it long ago. Mostly nature and simple computer science videos (every night I would write a script for the next day for it). But eventually, it got boring.

I don't even have the app on my phone or laptop. Never did. Just the name alone was enough. Tick tock tic toc tik tok.....sounds like a clock tick tocking down ready to explode. I don't even go on fb much anymore. YT is enough since I don't really watch TV.

Instagram and YouTube, in my opinion, are the winners in the popular app sphere, although it depends on which country you are in. On those apps, I've discovered that generally, "western" content is more interesting and valuable to me.

Youtube shorts and Instagram reels are the same.

The problem is that YouTube shorts and Instagram reels are a response to competition raised by Tik Tok. It's actually predatory capitalism and Neo liberalism run amok here with the group ByteDance looking at what happened to Facebook's Vines, the good and the bad, and they ended up refining what should have been Vine's strong points and gave more money to creators. What YouTube and Instagram, Facebook by extension, is an example of Moloch that Daniel Schmachtenberger and other systemic thinkers and philosophers talk about, when you factor in Spiral Dynamics stages of development, cognition, morality, developmental psychology, personality types/traits, shadows of the ego, Integral Theory's other lines of development, ideological beliefs indoctrinated, information ecology, and again predatory capitalism by big companies that use misinformation and marketing to manufacture conspicuous consumption of users.

Instagram and YouTube aren't that addictive for some reason.

The thing is with youtube: I can only watch the content I'm subbed to. With tiktok this is not possible. You immediately end up on the for you page and get flashed with teen girls doing thirst traps.

Nobody uses Facebook lol. You still live in 2018 or sum? Instagram is the new Facebook.

I joined a few leisure groups on there back in the day and still get notifications from them; and on occasion I check. I also play a game on my device that functions better at upgrading if you have a fb account. So for those purposes I do, but no interactions.

@Princess Arabia

I felt old when you mentioned Facebook. The groups there give me a culty vibe.

I'm unironically grateful that I don't use Tik-tok.

They kinda are still addictive, but in comparison to Tik Tok it's way worse.

That's when I was into food and nutrition and health stuff. It all depends on which group.

Then let it go my guy, maybe it’s not a TikTok problem persé but a you problem. If TikTok wouldn’t exist, what else you would’ve use to deal with the stress? YouTube? Youtube it’s now the problem?

When I’m stress I don’t go to my phone, I go outside for a walk and meditate what is going on.

Not me, you can try to search porn on TikTok and NOTHING will appear, and other sensitive adult stuff like drugs, etc. . Maybe you search horny content in other apps that’s what happens.

Also, what about with Reddit and Twitter? You can search porn and more sensitive content in there than on TikTok.

I don’t spend more than a minute in for your page. I use my apps very consciously, I go to do a specific task and I’m gone, I delete my apps. If I waste like 10 or 20 minutes it’s ok, I’m not hard on myself, I move on, have stuff going on more in your life outside your phone.

Porn isn't the problem, it's attention-whoring Instagram models luring in simps by jiggling their ass. You don't have to search for it to get flooded with that kind of content and it's bad for both young men and women.

Porn is better for you than these attention-whoring IG models. Porn serves a necessary function. These models are just wasting your time and distracting you from working on your day.

I wish IG had a setting to turn off all female models and celebrities. That is the trashiest of content. That would improve IG by 50% at least.

In my experience, Tiktok algorithm is very responsive to my activity.

I use it only for business purposes. After two days of researching products, and intentionally interacting with certain posts, my feed turned into a focused stream of product ads, which was exactly what I wanted.

Once I got distracted by some health hacks, and after watching them for a while, I got more health hacks.

There needs to be laws that give the user much more control over content algorithms

@Juan There is something about TikTok that is different. It is digital crack.

I don’t have problems with YouTube. Only watch self help videos on YouTube. And other educational stuff.

With TikTok, if you don’t like something you just scroll and another dopamine spike, and another and another. It trains your brain in a very unhealthy way.

Porn is the same.  If you don’t like the pornstar , you can just click on another one. You don’t like her in missionary, fast forward to doggystyle. You don’t like her in this scene but you like her in that screen. You don’t like blonde anymore in this moment and in the next 10 minutes you like brunettes.

This endless novelty destroys the male brain. TikTok is basically the same as porn but without genitals. Just endless novelty at the end of a click or swipe. If you have a real gf , she will bore you because it can’t match up to the endless novelty.

The thing with enjoyment is that it is endless/infinity and you can lose yourself in enjoyment. The whole thing with enjoyment is that it should be contained by setting up boundaries for enjoyment so you can actually enjoy. Otherwise Pinokkio’s pleasure island turns into torment.

This is what we can't understand. Everything is not for everybody. We focus our attention on the things we don't like and complain about it, while others are enjoying and finding useful the same thing. We seek out pain, then we complain about the pain when it hits.

For me my crack pipe is YouTube. So I've recently sworn myself off of YouTube to take back control of my life. One interesting Insight is that there's a lot of tough moments in life that would be suppressed with processing it by watching YouTube video.

Whether it be a tough existential moment of contemplating my death, or contemplating the death of other people around me that time is ticking and I won't have the people around me forever. Or I could just be me avoiding boredom from the fact that my life is actually quite boring and I've been distracting myself from that. Whereas if I can feel the pain long enough I will be motivated to do something about it.

I've also noticed that for me at least, doing anything that is training myself towords a life purpose, it's actually always difficult and takes actual work and will never be easier than this moment right now to start working on it. I always subconsciously avoid practicing when I need to practice such as writing and studying because in reality it's actually quite boring stuff to discipline yourself to do on your own.

Biggest insight for me is that life is actually more boring than you care to admit. You really have to work hard on building a beautiful life if you want a life that is not boring.

I forgive my past, I release the future, and I honor how I feel in the present.
