81 years ago on this day, the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann took the first ever dose of LSD (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide). He had discovered its profound hallucinogenic power just three days earlier, when he accidentally absorbed a small amount through his skin while working with it and similar compounds in his laboratory. 

On April 19th 1943, he intentionally dosed 250 ugs in his Swiss lab to explore its effects. As the trip came on, he quickly knew that he needed to get somewhere safe as the intensity of the trip was becoming overwhelming. Because of wartime restrictions on vehicle use (WW2), he decided to make a very trippy journey home via bicycle ride. 

This bicycle ride signifies the first ever documented and intentional use of LSD, and stands as an iconic moment and symbol for psychedelic enthusiasts around the world. Today, “Bicycle Day” is celebrated as a remembrance of the late and great chemist, Albert Hofmann, and also a counterculture holiday of celebration - a day to acknowledge and celebrate the impact psychedelics have had on music, spirituality, psychiatry, and culture at large.

It was just last year that I myself took my very first LSD trip, and it was one of the most transformative psychedelic experiences I have had to date. Here is an excerpt I wrote in my journal shortly after the trip: 

“A profound spiritual aspect of psychedelics is that they show you no matter how much the contents of consciousness can shift, morph, and change, pure consciousness - The “I AM” - is always stable. 

It’s like the most profound rock in the midst of an ever changing ocean. It’s rock-solid; and from normal states of consciousness, all the way through radical psychedelic states of consciousness, and back again, IT is there. 

The light of consciousness is always shining.”

Happy Bicycle Day 2024! Without psychedelics I would not be who I am today, and I would not understand the profound depth and possibilities that mind, consciousness, and the Universe are capable of.

Beautiful. I remember when I first learned to ride a bike, after falling and failing many times… but once I figured it out it just clicked and made sense instantaneously!
