Looking for opinions on ADHD medication

33 posts in this topic

Is there anyone with adhd who is taking meds? Are they worth it?

I am afraid of it becoming a crutch or even actually doing more harm than good.

Also, does anyone know if microdosing can be an alternative?

@Leo Gura sorry for tagging you, but you seem to have a lot of knowledge about all kinds of drugs in general. Can you share your thoughts, please?

Do you even have a diagnosis for ADHD?

I would work with behavioral changes first. Hire a therapist who specializes with ADHD if you’re struggling to maintain or discover behavioral changes on your own.

Medication to treat ADHD should be considered if you’ve tried the former with no long-term success.

@Yimpa I've been working with a coach for about 9 months, with 2 sessions per months. She is in favor of me starting to take medication. So is the person who diagnosed me.

But I am still kind of apprehensive, and wanted to hear some outside opinions.

And yeah, I wasn't able to make any behavioral changes so far. I feel kind of stuck, basically.

@Something Funny in that case I would trust your providers and your own experience.

As for my personal experience, I’ve been on them for several years. I no longer take them after I committed to and made major life changes.

@Yimpa could you share more, please?

What improvements / side effects have you noticed while on medication? Would you say that it helped you to then make those major changes that allowed you to get off the pills eventually?

What were you taking?

I took Vyvanse. Notable side effects for me were insomnia, increased heart rate, and increased anxiety. Despite that, it did help me make the major changes;  those changes and life lessons certainly did not occur overnight.

Look at this as a journey; not a destination.

@Something Funny Yeah if you have ADHD, I'd really recommend taking medication for it.

Keep in mind that just because a doctor diagnoses you with ADHD today doesn’t mean that it’s a life sentence. Our understanding of the mind and body changes.

@Yimpa how so? My understanding was that people who are born with adhd just have different brain chemistry, and that it's for life.

@Something Funny Got diagnosed with it, though likely a cptsd misdiagnosis.

But in the few years I was diagnosed with it, I researched a lot about it and spent a fair amount of time in online adhd communities.

I see. I am leaning towards trying out the medication. Thank you.

Idk, what those are to be honest. And I've never tried nicotine.

Nicotine makes me very calm/focused.
It's not a very creative/pleasant energy for me, but a study showed that people with ADHD had a large choline deficiency.

@Schizophonia that's interesting, thank you for sharing.

At the moment, I feel like I have too little experience and knowledge to start tinkering with stuff like this, so I think I will just go with meds and see how it works. But I will keep it in mind for the future.

Also, how do I know if my diagnosis is correct?
