  1. I am no expert in formal logic, but my own metaphysical understanding wants to call BS on Laws of Form. It is way too discrete and absolute in its basic assumptions. All distinctions can be subdivided infinitely, so it is impossible to ever totally define a distinction without calling on an infinite chain of sub-distinctions. It also rests within a materialist worldview. It assumes distinctions are observer-independent and stable. Quantum mechanics and idealism both challenge this assumption. To demonstrate the issue; consider that math is a system that formalizes distinctions. When we say '1', we also mean to say: 0.5 + 0.5 or 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 And so on forever. Laws of Form suggests these are all the same distinction fundamentally. But it fails to recognise the infinite sub-distinctions as unique distinctions in themselves, so I see flaws in it.
  2. The classical virtue of righteous honor is sorely lost on modern society. Bushido, 武士道, "The Way of the Warrior" - as broken down by Claude.ai The Seven Virtues (七徳, Shichitoku): Gi (義) - Righteousness Making moral decisions Acting with reason Choosing right over wrong Justice without bias Yu (勇) - Courage Facing fears Standing up for beliefs Not just physical bravery Acting despite consequence Jin (仁) - Benevolence Compassion for others Mercy when appropriate Concern for all life Leadership with kindness Rei (礼) - Respect Courtesy to all Proper etiquette Recognition of others' worth Self-control in conduct Makoto/Shin (誠) - Honesty/Truth Complete sincerity Truthfulness in word Genuine in action No deceit Meiyo (名誉) - Honor Personal dignity Living by moral principles Defending reputation Worth beyond life Chugi (忠義) - Loyalty/Duty Dedication to cause Faithful to commitments Service to principles Obligation to others Additional Concepts: Self-discipline Self-improvement Simple living Death before dishonor Service above self
  3. No, my genetics are average at best. For me to justify having kids I would need to be with a woman who wants to be a full-time amazing mother. Or give up on my life purpose to totally focus on them.
  4. Yes you are right. They are going to hate that conversation but it must be had. If they are open to that chat then great, if not then there's nothing I can do for them I am afraid. Yes that's a good way to think about it. It helps appreciate the good time I still have left. It just infuriates me that people so close to me have been on a collision course with disaster for decades and never made the effort to change. And now it's going to become mine and my future family's problem. At least I won't make the same mistake for my future kids. I couldn't live with myself if I were unable to work or provide a service to society in some way.
  5. Whatifalthist has a deep psychological need to feel intelligent, significant and ahead of his peers. He is certainly intelligent, but constantly needs to feel validated for it. That's why he constantly hints at being a part of mastermind groups, always mentioning how young he is, always suggesting he sees something you don't. A huge driver for many people is a feeling of significance. To have a purpose and to matter. But significance is a slippery construct, and a bottomless cup one will never fulfill. So you take that kind of person, give them psychedelics, and a tragic dose of mental instability and fame and you get Whatifalthist.
  6. Balatro is amazing. So simple yet so good. I am a simple man, I like big numbers.
  7. Data science is a great field. So many job paths to pursue. Up to you whether you need to change university. You need to be able to teach yourself and come up with new solutions on your own, don't expect university to prepare you for your whole career. Maybe stick with this course and teach yourself the good stuff in your own time. I hope you don't write your resume and emails like you wrote this post.
  8. The highest purpose for raising children is not just to help them survive to adulthood. But instead to empower them with the highest levels of love, autonomy and self-governence possible. Freedom to create one's own life is a privilege few are lucky to be blessed with.
  9. Provide it for yourself? Hand-me-down insights are like a treasure map, but having insights for yourself is unearthing the real treasure. Eventually you must become your own teacher.
  10. 1. Get a new business off the ground in my industry 2. Find a long term partner 3. Develop a social circle of like minded people in my city
  11. I used to yap a bit in the politics forum. But I went back and read some of the things I said and quickly regretted it. So no more politics for me. But if I fully admitted my bullshit I'd have to become a mute.
  12. Christmas is a social construction. But have a Merry Christmas anyway.
  13. Nice share. Always knew they were fishy but this explained nicely how they actually take your chips.
  14. This is just what happens when society evolves to become more complicated. The individuals within it need to also evolve and outperform the generation before, else it's not really progress. Also, we now have eight billion people on the planet. There are just way more people competing for resources.
  15. Modern indie films have never been better. Problem is the marketing models for indie films suck. Go to film festivals if you want to watch great stuff. Blockbusters are financially forced to cast too wide of a net to be truly great, with few exceptions. Also a big studios goal isn't to make good movies, it's to cheat on tax. Hollywood accounting is biblically corrupt.
  16. Same logic can be applied to Zoomers when they eventually take over from millennials. And gen Alpha after them. Today's iPad addicted diaper babies will inevitably take over, and we will be better off for it. -- The oldest millennials I know are getting prepared for their boomer arc. They are buying multiple properties and getting ready to horde resources and blame kids for not working hard enough. You too will become like a boomer, it's only a matter of time. It's almost as if the boomer issue is not a problem with a specific generation, and instead it's a greater cultural and survival problem brought about by aging and success seeking.
  17. FXPHD - Learn everything Compositing Academy - Learn Nuke ($$$) At some point, you will need to create the final shot and that is what Nuke is for. Any VFX artist would be served to learn basic compositing. Nuke is where at most VFX jobs are.
  18. Blender is a jack of all trades tool. Learn it a bit since you can do a bit of everything there, but there are more specialized tools you will mostly use later on EDIT: Kind of not true. It's free so pragmatically it makes a lot of sense in smaller teams.
  19. The Ayunda video was made by Robin Zeeb. Go DM him and ask him how to learn to do that. He's a one-man band. You need to make it your job to get good, simple as that. Do something else as a hobby or go all in.
  20. This is a VFX career path. I'd recommend learning Nuke and Blender to start. Maybe Houdini if you like it. Get a showreel together of basic work and get a junior level role ASAP. All the best learning in this work happens when you get creative under pressure on the job.
  21. Insight #9 The world is exactly what you make of it. A lack of consciousness makes you a victim of circumstance, and robs you of your ability to flow with reality. Increasing your energy and non-destructive free will is the true meaning of the new age term 'waking up'.
  22. Insight #8 Make peace with God, or you will face his wrath. Be a Taoist.
  23. Insight #7 - Suffering Love the people around you. Everyone suffers tenfold more than they let on. A person in suffering always has a reason why. Most suffering happens purely out of circumstance, not because of any error a person made. Yet people tend to blame themselves or others, when the truth is its no one's fault. Most people are truly victims, and do not have access to the resources or knowhow to overcome suffering. If you are not suffering greatly, you are extremely lucky.
