I'm doing like a 13hr "intermittent fast" right now, probably not wide enough to be a true intermittent fast. Thanks for the idea to push it further.

@Angelo John Gage cool thanks. I find if I just wait out any hunger in the evening for example, eventually my body just recalibrates the feeling of hunger and it goes away. But sometimes that takes a while. I don't think I'll worry about hunger suppressants or anything. I find coffee can go either way - either I can wait it out like you, or I get mega hungry and jittery and just need to eat Been shedding a few lbs which is encouraging going into a race. It's hard to tell with the fluctuations of water, but I can see it's dropping a little bit.

If you have the secretion, my understanding is that you need to vaporize it, you should not snort or plug it. I can't actually remember right now if this is because A) there are some toxins in the secretion that become cleaned off by vapourizing, or if it's because B) the form that's found in the secretion doesn't absorb well by those other ROAs. I think it's A) I'm not an expert on vaping technique. You have to be careful to not burn it, the idea is to make it evaporate and inhale those vapours. Personally, I would vouch for synthetic 5-MeO-DMT because it doesn't hassle any toads and is more pure, but pretty cool to have that opportunity anyways. Are you in Mexico? I hope someone else can contribute more definite information for you. Good luck! -
@Serotoninluv interesting, keep us posted

Is Sananga the frog toxin as well, or is it a different material? It's very interesting that Kambo is becoming more and more popular. Thanks for sharing @Nexeternity -

@Ponder Yeah hehe just fucking around, I knew what you meant Alan Watts is great, I always get so much out of listening to his wise words. It's really tragic that he poisoned himself with alcohol. I think some people just can't handle that level of awareness. Or maybe he was just an alcoholic who happened to be an enlightened master, plain as that. I was thinking it would be hilarious to get a voice actor with a deep south US accent, or like thick cockney or something to read Alan Watts. -

I disagree, I'd say he's highly rated, I don't think I've heard of anyone rate him poorly. I give him 5 stars myself. Maybe you mean he could be more popular? That's different. He could be more popular. It's hard to market yourself in the internet age when you're dead, but people should really check Alan Watts out. -
In my opinion, for 99% of people celibacy will create pathologies and goes against our nature. If you suppress the sex drive it's apt to leak out in all kinds of ugly ways. I believe that most people are better off channeling it into expressions of sexual passion with someone they love. There are exceptions.

I think "Smartness of a reply" is sort of a function like this: Smartness of reply = (smartness of person) * (time put into reply) * (attention/focus on the task) Most people aren't that smart. Also, they don't take much time on an internet forum, are half distracted when doing it, and might not really properly read what you said. Like in conversation, most people are so focused on what they are saying, they forget how it connects to what the other person said, so they might totally miss the mark. For example I already forgot what you asked exactly, and I just skimmed all of the other longer replies, and feel like I'm going on a bit of a tangent here. I don't think I'm a dummy, but that's exactly what a dummy *would* think. I've been noticing lately that most people just aren't that smart. I try not to look at the world that way because it can be very judgemental, but also you have to look at the world clearly and honestly. Pretending that everyone is smart just so you don't have to feel bad for judging them is a bit dishonest. Better to just look at it honestly and note that it's not a bad thing if someone isn't "smart". It's not a judgement of someone's worth. Another very important factor is that by definition, everyone is hyperaware of the areas they are smart in, and unaware in the areas they are not. This is a cognitive bias that make everyone think they're smarter than everyone else. There was a funny line in a standup routine (maybe Ellen?): Think of the average person's smartness. Not that smart right? Now remember that half the population is dumber than that average person!! lol

@Angelo John Gage and anyone else: What do you think of those bathroom scales that try to measure your bodyfat via your body's conductivity (or capacitance or something electrical)? How much subjective hunger do you put up with when cutting?

@Useless folk I'm going to preface this with a caveat that I'm not a doctor and this is not medical advice. But I'll do my best to share what I know. It sounds like you're going through something really horrible right now, I hope you're ok and have been able to get some actual medical advice if possible. There isn't a specific dangerous interaction between nicotine and armodafinil. If there was, the drug companies would have noticed by now and we would be informed about this. There is not a well known problem with combining the two, and you're 100% for sure not the first person to have a cigarette with armodafinil. Here are some possibilities: However, I think it's possible that you have some other problem and the combination, or one of the drugs alone, tipped the balance in your system and is causing these bad symptoms. Another possibility is that you are having a bad reaction to the armodafinil. Have you had it before without the negative symptoms? Perhaps it is not a drug that's compatible with you. Another possibility is that the drug you took isn't actually armodafinil. Are you sure of it's veracity? Do you have high blood pressure? It is extremely unlikely that you have suffered brain damage/injury from this, what you are feeling is probably not what you think it is. Anyways I hope you're OK. Please check back in and let us know how you are. And yes, you should quit smoking after this. It should be easy to quit now. It's one of the worst habits you could have for your health.

@Not me It really just comes down to thermodynamics, like Guyenet said. So if you ate a lot of dried fruit, yeah you'd get fat. It would be easier to overeat dried fruit than fresh fruit, but harder to overeat dried fruit than candy. Your body can get fat from any kind of food if you eat too many calories of it, whether we consider it "healthy" or not. However, a good rule of thumb is that most "healthy" foods are harder to overeat than industrial, processed foods.

The one you love doing, and will actually do and stick to! Everybody and every body is different, so you have to follow your passion as they say. I'm a bit biased towards running because that's one that I've fallen in love with, but I think it's a great choice because you can do it basically anywhere, anytime, with minimal gear. It's a very intense form of exercise, so it's really easy to get in shape with running. As a species we are "born to run".

@Leo Gura or maybe he's a Blue/Orange herring Is the best thing to do with red herrings is to simply ignore them and move on? I feel like a lot of the protest around JP just fuels the fire. @Serotoninluv yes someone who could simply be pulling up reds to blue/orange would be better to embrace. I've noticed people who behave like this, but unfortunately they don't make as much noise, or stir up controversy like JP does, so they don't tend to get the spotlight as much. The tragedy of our age. Here I am unable to come up with any names. @ivory and everyone else in this thread, great discussion here folks, thank you.

Different strokes for different folks. @Ponder turquoise eh? Ready for coral you say? Sure thing buddy Weed will resonate better at certain stages, and psychedelics will resonate better at other stages. To be frank, weed tends to help people move from blue to orange or orange to green. Psychedelics typically help at a notch up from that, helping people move up to yellow. This is speaking very broadly and generally, obviously there are exceptions, yourself being one of them since you're at turquoise and poised for coral Not saying there's something bad about weed and that psychedelics are superior, it's just a different fit for different people at different stages of their lives. The one thing to watch out for is the chronic weed smoking, which can ruin your memory, motivation and awareness. Some people seem to be able to function at a very high level constantly stoned however. Also, to clarify, psychedelics (LSD, mushrooms, 5-MeO-DMT, mescaline and so on) are absolutely not physically addictive whatsoever. It's marginally possible to develop a psychological addiction to psychedelics, but extremely uncommon. They tend to be the opposite of addictive because tolerance builds up very quickly, and they scrub you of compulsive behaviour. -
What do you all think of the theory that JP is: pulling red up to blue/orange helping blue/orange integrate calling green out on some bullshit that it needs to transcend in order to progress to yellow I can see this very easily, that he's playing a major role in helping people move up the spiral (although I doubt he would contextualize it in this way). OTOH I can definitely see that he's cementing the status quo blue/orange stage in even deeper. One thing is for sure, we have a long way to go still before humanity can operate at green/yellow as a whole.

My interpretation/understanding/impression, inescapably flawed but possibly useful: In zen no-mind describes the state of unconditioned being-ness. Ralston describes essentially the same thing, but maybe more emphasis on the route. Not-knowing being a prerequisite to no-mind, you can't abide in no-mind if you know what it is already, since that would be a mind's attempt to condition/categorize unconditioned being. It's funny how much detail he goes into on this topic. It's both futile and crucial, a waste of time and also the only thing worth bothering with. I have to admit that found the writing tedious in parts of that book and majorly skimmed the middle 1/2. If I was more disciplined and dedicated I'm sure it would have been pure gold. -

Will this be your first psychedelic excursion? First trip dose is typically around 2g, but 1.5g-3g is a decent range to consider. Intention is entirely up to you. Personally, I emphasize being open to everything. Sometimes I'll set an intention, but then also allow it to sit on the side, because I find the greatest insights, progress and experiences are ones that I couldn't possible have contrived at the outset of the trip. Often I'll meet the intention, and then also be surprised with something that ended up being even more important/juicy/fun/insightful. Integration: Again it's really up to you, you're the pilot, and it's going to depend on the trip, where you're at, what you are integrating. It could look like this: as you are coming down you may reflect, talk with fellow trippers, take notes if solo. Next day, again reflecting and embracing the trip. Next week and so on: possibly implementing things you observed in the trip, or just allowing it to settle in. Have a great trip @Yannik! -
@Not me I think Guyenet is correct, but I think that saying people get fat because they eat food that tastes too good is a misinterpretation of what he's saying... it's slightly more nuanced than that. Food can taste extremely good, and be very healthy. The problem is eating food that is excessively calorie dense and over processed. Packaged food, sugary food, overly salted and so on, are the real culprits. It's too easy to over-consume calories with these kinds of foods. Many parts of the world with amazing delicious food have very low levels of obesity, and many places with terrible food have very high levels of obesity. Thailand is a great example - amazing food, hardly any obesity. Scotland is another example - you could say not the most famous for refined cuisine, yet extremely high levels of obesity.

Wow that's it -
Its genetic. Another option is to not bother fighting the tide and accept it. It's not a bad thing. Does anyone look at Leo and say "that guy sure is ugly without any hair". I bet he gets more play without hair than back when he did. MPB = silverback

Yeah I'm not quite committed enough to go full skinny marathon man mode, so Iike you I want to preserve muscle tissue and maximize fat loss. I ended bored eating and pre-bedtime snacks a few years ago, that brought be down about 20lbs to where I am now. So that really worked for me as well. Anyways, great video again. I don't want to derail the thread anymore with my own particular weight loss story. I hope this thread is useful for anyone loosing weight no matter where you're starting out.

@Angelo John Gage I was afraid you'd tell me to count calories I know you're right about that.. One problem I always have with apps like myfitnesspal is that my idea of a serving is a lot bigger than the usual idea, so I end up having to adjust everything. Also, there's so much variance in things like sauces - even with my own cooking, I'll make a tomato sauce loaded with olive oil one week, much more energy dense than a lighter fresher one the next week. I guess it doesn't need to be so accurate, just looking for the big picture here? Or maybe I need to go old school and get a scale. Honestly when I think about all this accounting it sounds easier just to run more. But then I'd probably end up instinctively eating more to compensate, and I'd be in the same spot, which would bring me back to calorie counting. I'm probably too lazy to count calories strictly, but I know I need to at least try to get a rough idea. When I did the DXA scan I got my base calorie needs, and it should be pretty easy to estimate calories burned from running. Re: whole foods, I'm already eating 80-90% whole foods on that definition. We barely have anything in the house that's highly processed, nutrient-poor. The closest thing to junk food around here is plain stone-ground whole corn tortilla chips, good quality dark chocolate and the occasional beer. Luckily don't get cravings for crap food really. Another question: I have a big long distance race coming up in a 4-5 weeks, how close to the race do you think it's safe to keep cutting? Can I do it right up until I begin carb loading in the 2-3 days leading up to the race, or should I ease off in the final week or something?

Solid video! You've slain so many weight loss myths. I hope everyone watches this. A couple questions: Any specific advice for going down to pretty lean levels? Last time I checked I was 17% body fat (DXA scan) - goal is to cut down to around 10-12% so I can run faster. Currently running about 6x per week, 70-80km/week, eating an unmeasured shit-ton, but not between dinner and breakfast. How do you define whole foods? For example, would you consider whole grain bread or rice noodles to be whole foods? I know some people would not, but personally I do think of them as "whole" foods, even though they're in fact pretty processed. I would find it hard to eat 80-90% completely unprocessed food. Thanks @Angelo John Gage
