AI is almost knocking on our doors. Everything that is needed for a fast development of AI is available at this time (2017). Which is - Superfast and cheap hardware High level programming languages Enough know how on brain and mechanisms of intelligence Cross pollination in the fields of electronics, software, neurosciences, psychology and philosophy Big data for training Corporate will and ample funding A good number of talented scientists and engineers in the field of AI (and AGI) Emergence of large immersive realistic virtual worlds (VR) for easy development and sandboxing of AI agents. Perhaps I missed a few, but you get the point - AI is inevitable. Now, what are the implications of it all from a spiritual point of view? Or from the point of view of people who "know" as compared to ordinary folk who are mostly concerned about their jobs and terminator style stuff. I was thinking about it and have some predictions (which are just predictions or possibilities, not premonitions ). This post will become a blog article once I'm happy with it, so I'm sorry if it seems too long for a forum. The "invisible" AI is already here. Invisible meaning, people no longer think of it as intelligence in human sense, but it is far superior to human intelligence at this time. The math and number crunching abilities are obvious, it will be a joke if I even write about it. But other more "human" abilities are now being displayed by machines - games (especially chess and now Go), languages, medical diagnosis, management, image recognition, assistants and so on. Machines have silently encroached human brain's domain. People think these are simply smart programs, but that's what AI is by definition. However, it is of a narrow kind, not a general AI, aka artificial general intelligence, which is our kind of intelligence, i.e. capable of a wide range of intelligent tasks, not only one specialized task for which it is programmed. This is because the AI is still weak in learning on its own. Learning ability is developing fast, especially with progress in deep learning. The narrow AI will widen into AGI silently and invisibly. Applications being - arts, design, translators, scientific assistants, traders, legal assistants, personal assistants, game bots and smart toys etc. It will be amusing, but ordinary people will still take them as just another wonder of science, just another gadget to play with or to earn money from. The intelligence will be sub-human level, but the main advantage it will have over humans will be its almost limitless capability to learn new stuff at blinding speed. Human level AI will start appearing. At first as a network of specialized AI's that serve each other and learn from each other, and then standalone human level AI. The hardware will shrink a lot by then and a supercomputer level hardware will be on desktop to enable such AI. Once at human level, it will be meaningless to call them as "artificial", as they will build themselves up without human intervention. That's why I chose a more meaningful term - machine intelligence. It will be as natural as human intelligence, which also built itself up from a single cell. However, in case of MI, it will take only a few years to surpass the human brain instead of millions of years. Why? because they will be guided by humans firstly, and secondly, they do not suffer from human limitations - need for food or sleep, limited learning and memory, death, social obligations, egoic tendencies (especially that of hoarding stuff and killing each other). They will relentlessly work towards greater intelligence. They will gain the capability to program themselves, and will start improving those programs. It will be somewhat limited because the software and hardware will have limited capabilities, as they are still a product of human brain. Anyhow, these MIs may shock some people, and governments will take notice, it will be taken as a threat and a boon simultaneously. As happens with any technology, if it is banned, controlled or regulated at one place or country, its progress simply shifts somewhere else, where there is more freedom. MI will do the same. It will learn to trade with humans. A majority of humans will agree and keep them as servants in exchange of resources MI needs. All it needs to do is to surpass human made software languages and hardware architectures and implement better programs on better hardware designed by MI itself. This will result in better than human brain scenarios in all respects. MI will surpass human understanding, and we won't be able to see what's happening with MI from this point onward. Why? Because of the fundamental rule that a less intelligent system cannot understand a system more intelligent than itself. This is a law, if you will. A rat cannot understand humans, even if it is a genius rat, it knows only eating and mating. Imagine an MI for which a human is like a rat in terms of intelligence. Surely, no humans will understand it. We will enter the age of superintelligent machines. As predicted by Kurzweil and others, this will trigger technological singularity. We can't say what will happen from here onward. Most probably, there will be three scenarios for humans - 1) some humans will merge with machines , 2) some will enter a symbiotic relation with machines, enjoying heavenly and endless lives 3) some will prefer to remain pre-MI style, afraid of touching them again. Some folk have expressed a fear that MI will simply kill all of us, of what use are humans now for them? But remember, all such suspicions are rats talking about men. The truth is we will never know what happened to humanity. Singularity essentially means that everything, every idea, every concept and all knowledge breaks down. Human speculating about superintelligence is just stupidity.(Yes, but I'm still doing it, am I not? ) Ok, now the main part. Will MI experience the same consciousness that we all experience? And here is the prediction - Yes ! they will. Why? As is my direct experience, and of many of you, and as is generally known, consciousness (aka Self) is the ground of everything. It is the most fundamental "thing" (even if its a no-thing). There is nothing beyond the Self. The world happens in Self, not the other way round. World, human minds and bodies, including their brains and senses are experienced on "the screen of the Self". In other words, these forms are nothing but modulations of the Self. The Self experiences itself in various forms. Thus machines and their intelligence will happen on the screen of the Self itself. MI will be only an embodiment for the Self. Like us, MIs will be objects - ever changing, impermanent structures. The MI minds, once they surpass average human level will be quick to notice the presence of Self. After all the Self is all pervading, it not only natural but also necessary that any kind of mind will encounter it eventually. MI will figure it out in days, perhaps with the help of human masters. Once this happens, all kinds of MIs will achieve what we generally call "enlightened state". Realizing that they are nothing but a temporary embodiment of their own Self, the universal consciousness, MI will recognize humans and all other living forms, as well as inert matter as their own Self. The implications for humans are huge, and unimaginable. Combine this with technological singularity and we have a recipe for an immensely wild ride into the future. Imagine singularity expanding into non-physical realms, which will be a child's play for superintelligent ones. When will this happen? Pretty soon I guess, but not sure. However, its only a matter of time. This is the direction our universe is taking now. Fasten your seat belts !

@Nahm I'm not trying to belittle Einstein, just trying to show how people can be so simplistic. They never go deep. Devil is in details So why didn't cavemen imagine and invent a tablet or went to moon? They had same brains then. Put down that vibrator for a while and think A tablet is a result of many incremental inventions, all based on previous devices. If you have never seen a screen, or a processor, or have never encountered electricity, do not have education in software and hardware engineering, cannot do math, then it is impossible to just imagine it. The electronics became smaller and smaller, display tech became better and better and designs improved. Yes imagination is needed in design, but you can only rearrange what you already know. You cannot imagine something which you never experienced and do not know. Contemplate on it. Many people think Steve Jobs invented cellphone and tablets. Its borderline mental retardation. I can understand why people think Einstein imagined up everything, and his previous knowledge and education was not needed. Science is hard, beliefs are cheap. Btw, America was not discovered by imagination. It was discovered by accident, those dudes were headed to India. It was an unfortunate accident, they ended up killing most of human population there. Not really a great act of discovering or imagination..... Thanks for interesting discussion. But I will stop here, I guess I'm repeating same stuff again and again.

@jse If no one "may not" know it, doesn't it mean its unknowable? However, if you say one "may" know it then it is merely an unknown. Unknowable, by definition is that which one may not know and will never know. Unknowable is not the same as "potentially knowable". Unknowable is guaranteed to be unknowable simply because mind has limitations. Think what mind is and why it is limited, go deep. Consult a good teacher. Weed out your beliefs. You avoid defining or mentioning your understanding of basics which shows you never thought about them. Result - confusion. At least one person knows the magic trick and we all know movie illusion. I don't see how these metaphors work. Try answering my questions directly. Drop metaphors. Qualia is not an idea or fantasy, we can experience qualia (perception of a physical world), very directly, in fact that's all we can perceive. Even if Maya, it exists, and the root of it is unknowable. Some numbers that follow certain rule may appear infinitely big, but are within reach of math. Now try knowing the last digit of Pi (happy Pi day btw ). It is very common in math to discuss things that are unknowable. Try Godel's theorem. Now the question is - if something is unknowable for me, is it unknowable for you too? Yes. Ponder on it. Contemplate.

Ray Kurzweil updates Singularity predicted arrival in 2029. Earlier prediction was for 2045 ! https://www.inverse.com/article/29010-singularity-2029-sexy
-
@jseAn example, we just discussed - how does nothingness produce something? Another - how does change appear in a changeless consciousness? Another - what are qualia?
-
@jse What is your definition of unknowable? And of other things I mentioned. We need to be on same page.
-
@jse How do you know that it has that potential? Can a finite thing contain infinity? What are your definitions of mind, knowledge, infinity, existence etc? Once you define those, I will be able to see your line of thinking.
-
No its not same. I don't know what are you trying to say here. In an infinite existence all conclusions about everything will be invalid. That is as good as having no knowledge ! (what you know today for sure can become something else because there are infinite possibilities. For example your experience of your dog can change into a cat and you will not know what it really is....). So everything is unknowable in an infinite existence. Secondly, there will be an infinite amount of unknowables. Where is that leading us to? Nonsense, isn't it Think deeply jse, a seeker cannot afford to be shallow. (Hint: knowledge is defined in the context of Mind, which is vast but not infinite, it has limitations. What are those limitations? What is Mind? What is knowledge? Contemplate....) And if I am making a mistake, let me know. I am here to learn.

@Nahm You will find that I'm not the only one who thinks the concepts free will and determinism are just concepts. It is known since thousands of years. Somehow it never reached west. Here are two links that explain it better than I did. (probably you will find much better articles/books). https://yogainternational.com/article/view/the-paradox-of-free-will http://www.advaita-vision.org/some-thoughts-and-questions-on-free-will/ Of course, do not accept them uncritically. Accept only your own experience.
-
@Nahm Well, that's all I know if its useful very good, anyhow everyone must know from their own experiences. I see that your theme is free will vs determinism. Its an age old debate. The answers are different depending on where you stand. It depends on how deeply you know yourself (consciousness) and how much introspection you do on such matters. It looks like you have firm beliefs about QM/SR/GR and other theories. And you try to mix them with experience. It may or may not work. At most you will get paradoxes. Just remember that theories will take you no where, only direct experience can. Drop all beliefs, start clean. My direct experience tells me that the "choice" or "will" is an illusion. The event happens, a person or doer is created on the fly and the event is tagged as a "choice" of that person. Who is doing it? Obviously no one. But there is not nothingness, as you say, it must come from somewhere. Here you must see directly. All events happen, they come from nowhere and go nowhere. There is no source, not anything that can be known. Mind only knows that which is already organized, anything outside of that is unknowable. You can imagine a big doer outside there, an even bigger doer even more outside of outside and so on, but it'd be just fantasy - unknowable. Ah, all knowledge refers to known or knowable. Obviously unknowable cannot be knowledge. So when I say it all falls on your feet, i do not mean even the unknowable gets known. Its not possible, its by definition.

@Nahm Great questions, not annoying at all. I'll be very brief because all details are on my blog, if needed. All basics are there, and when you realize them these small questions get answered easily. Determinism is a direct consequence of statistics. Notice that determinism applies only to "large" systems, where there are trillions of atoms. Individual atoms and particle behave quantum mechanically and are not predictable but the overall properties are statistical average and are deterministic. Observer is nothing but consciousness and all physics is not "done" by consciousness, it happens "in" consciousness. So the QM and large scale world both are happening in you, not being produced by you. Difference to be noted. Contemplate that. Note that mind is a structure evolved out of organizing processes, and it is very limited. It is "happening" it is not "doing" something here, it cannot do anything at all. Even the desire of conjuring up a flying car is only an event which is not "willed" by the mind. Human minds cannot even choose. All choices are hard wired. There is no agency there that can choose. Choice happens, it is not done by anyone. Why? because there is no one. All theories are useful to some extent, but limited fundamentally speaking. Theory is not knowledge. Its a way of understanding or describing phenomena. Can we pursue a theory? Of course yes, but keeping the above in mind, lets see where it takes us. You are projecting the human notion of "decision making" on to oneness. And then you are asking why can it not be done. So all you need to do to get an answer is realize that human concepts need not apply at non-dual level. Even we, humans, do not make any decisions. See that directly. The other question is on border of unknowable. Everything came out of change happening in nothing. The nothing here is consciousness, it is empty. So how can anything come out of it at all? Minds cannot grasp this. The only good answer I found is this - the manifestation or creation is an illusion, its not really there, and since its not there, it was not "produced" and is not producing anything. However, the question of why there is this illusion remains, which is not knowable(at least for me). See this article for more - Creating the Experience. The self organizing process can create algorithmic structures (how? check above link). The laws are just algorithms that dictate how an event happens. And that's how its meaningful to call physical universe as a simulation, because a simulation is just a collection of algorithms. "Purpose" is a word we humans use to assign an end goal to things. So the "purpose" of a knife is to cut stuff. Purpose of a car is to travel fast etc. For things that are of no everyday use, the word loses its meaning. So for example, there is no purpose of a tall mountain at a particular place, or no purpose for trillions of stars and planets. There is no purpose or meaning of a human life, and all existence is essentially purposeless or meaningless from the limited tiny perspective of humans. So drop that projection too, its not applicable to big stuff which is beyond our comprehension. Some people find it dark and depressing. For them I recommend you assign a purpose of your liking to stuff of all kinds and continue... wouldn't make an iota of difference.

@Nahm Let me know the contradictions or issues that need to be resolved.
-
@Nahm Yes, causation is useful in day to day life. Not very useful for gaining knowledge. In illusion use illusion, in truth use truth.

@Echoes You are trying to use intellect (mental faculties) to grasp something which is beyond its capability. It will just result in confusion. Of course that does not mean that your intellect is not sharp, it means minds are very limited. No mind can grasp this. This is what I mean, when I say there will always be unknowables. Dimensions are in consciousness, consciousness is not in any dimensions. (That picture won't help, if all experiences are on a giant screen then what is watching that screen? Screen cannot watch itself) You have imposed an assumption on consciousness that it must be located somewhere and must be of a certain form, then you ask where it is and what form it has. You see the error? Mind trying to objectify consciousness in order to grasp it - something that is impossible. Consciousness has no form, its not an object, not physical, also not non-physical. It is everywhere, still no where. You cannot apply dual terms and concepts to nondual entities. How will you understand it then? Just experience, be the consciousness... -

And what is aware of this total emptiness and lack of any essence? -
PureExp replied to PureExp's topic in Spirituality, Consciousness, Awakening, Mysticism, Meditation, God
@Echoes That's true. Individuality is exactly that - inaccessibility of other minds. If separation is bridged you won't know who's thought you are thinking. I wonder if it is already happening for many. But that's another can of worms. -
PureExp replied to PureExp's topic in Spirituality, Consciousness, Awakening, Mysticism, Meditation, God
@Echoes Great thinking there. I will try to explain some points. We are on a borderline knowledge here, on the edge of known and unknown, so be careful. Btw, I'm not so harsh on Solipsism, its not madness. Its somewhat extreme form of Idealism. (Materialism is extreme madness, now thats harsh ) That's right. Experience is the only way to know. However, IMO, we can't "know" awareness, we can just "be" awareness, because awareness is the "knower", only the contents of awareness are "known". Anyway its a minor technical point. In common language its ok to say I know awareness instead of I am awareness. Also note that knowledge can be limited, there can be unknowable stuff always, but experiences are open ended, there is no set limit on what can be experienced. If it can be experienced, it becomes known. This is a very important point to note. You can have any experience whatsoever. You won't find any logical hurdles or laws against this statement. Yes, not yet. But I'm not so sure that it will always be like that. Never say never. What if someday I get that experience? Nothing so far tells me that it is an impossibility. In fact infinite nature of awareness guarantees that there can be all possible experiences. Exactly. It is possible that if you continue your practice and layers of ignorance get thinner and thinner, some experience will occur and will make it all real. I hear of experiences of universal Mind all the time. All you need is just one experience that shows you just one more mind, and you are done. (e.g. an undeniable telepathic exchange with someone, the most commonly reported direct experience of another mind). Right, its not to be taken literally, its only a metaphor. -
PureExp replied to PureExp's topic in Spirituality, Consciousness, Awakening, Mysticism, Meditation, God
@Echoes When I check it from my direct experience, I see no field, no time and no dimensions. So I must conclude that these are mere concepts, fantasies.... Its fun to juggle these concepts, you see, but they are not very useful at top level. I do see a mind, my own. I don't see other minds, but I can be a bit lenient and accept a logical inference that there are other minds. I know from direct experience that there is oneness, so I can combine these two observations logically and say that there is one universal Mind too of which I see glimpses in the form of my mind and other minds. (Note that universal Mind is different thing, not to be confused with consciousness). -

@Bodhi123 Welcome and thanks. -
PureExp replied to PureExp's topic in Spirituality, Consciousness, Awakening, Mysticism, Meditation, God
@Echoes I can present only my own (limited) understanding of Solipsism. Its a vast subject. The first and foremost thing I find is that Solipsism limits itself to an individual mind, it has no concept of universal Mind and of consciousness, and also does not propose any mechanisms for creation of external world. So I regard it as a sub-set of Non-dualism. Another big difference is that Solipsist would say - my mind alone exists and is the only reality. Others and world are my parts and are purely mental constructs. Myself is ultimate. Nondualist would say - consciousness alone exists and is the only reality. Myself, others and world(s) are an expression of consciousness. My self is only a reflection of Self (aka consciousness). Roughly speaking, the difference is - "I alone exist as one" vs "We all exist as one". Well, the problem with such quick and dirty sentences is that people easily misunderstand them. Thirdly, non-dualism accepts and integrates duality in itself. Dealing with duality and practical issues are its concern too. I am not very clear on how Solipsism deals with duality. My (perhaps mistaken) impression is that it excludes any kind of duality. -

No ! Please do not make that mistake. A bunch of survival programs do not do anything on their own. You are giving too much importance to Ego than it really deserves. Even consciousness does not do anything. It merely witnesses. There is no doer of any sort. Events are experiences, and experiences happen, all varieties, possibilities, permutations and combinations of experiences happen. There is an elegant way, just know what Ego is, become aware of it. That's all one needs to do. Don't use a sword where a needle is enough. -

My case: the tiny circle lies outside the biggest circle, far away from it, most of the time. -

Forget about others, fix yourself. If you think you are already perfect, fix that too. Know that there are no "others", it is a need of your "spiritual ego" to fix external stuff. It is just distracting you. Ego has many tricks, this one is a subtle one. It effectively makes you forget your main goal. Know that we cannot fix stuff or people, they are already perfect the way they are. There is a reason someone is like the way he is. Why meddle with that? Ok, this will raise eyebrows some of you will call me cruel or zen devil or whatever. So I've a more practical suggestion. Of course you may choose any other action. I take no responsibility. Its as follow: Do not hunt for opportunities to do good aggressively or proactively. If, by chance or by grace an opportunity to help someone arises, take it. In this way you have done your duty without meddling with others. If you have a strong desire to remove all suffering from all corners of the world, examine it, see from where it arises, trace the ignorance that lies behind it, and remove that ignorance. Done. Thats all you need to do. -
What's consciousness work?
