  6. All addictions (alcohol, drugs, sex, food, internet, etc) arise from a fundamental and desperate need to escape from "the ego", escape from ourselves. The problem occurs when we try and escape from ourselves, as ourselves. This is not possible.

  9. People who have practiced self-inquiry for decades eventually come to the same conclusion, if they are honest. Self-inquiry and other observation practices are often used to reinforce the sense of a separate autonomous entity. The spiritual practices themselves are hijacked by the thought process, and this strengthens the illusion of a (non-existent) ego.
