  1. i agree when you say that a neural network performs calculations that are too complex for us to foresee just with intuition, but we can do the math by ourselves on each node to compute the NN's output by hand. there's nothing strange about how a neural network computes outputs. ok so it must be the learning process that makes the NN mysterious, right? not really... a NN trains by iterating over a training set and updating its edges' weights in order to mimic the unknown function that generated the training set. it's straightforward calculus 1 math. alright... so it must be the training set! this is probably the most interesting part... how to generate the proper training set so that the NN can improve its performance? let the NN run on a virtual simulation playing against itself over and over! at least, that's how they did it on alpha zero. but still, there must be a human made reward function telling how to gather good training sets. ok so it's all about the reward function then. i'd agree on that. you know what would make me scared of AI? if they learned how to design their own reward functions, just like humans choosing what they want to learn! holly molly, that would make me shit bricks. as for now... nah... everytime i try to come up with an AI model that's able to design its own reward functions, i fall back on the old paradigm, where i am the one defining a meta reward function.
  2. no it's different. you can fully understand AI from the bottom (CPU, RAM memory etc) to the top (compiled machine learning libraries, frameworks and applications). there is no mystery at all. your electronic device was built using black box abstractions all the way: from the thing you physically touch to the properties of the words on its screen. the application can be malevolent, though.
  3. fear mankind! AI per se is just elaborated mathematics (probabilities/statistics, linear algebra and calculus, mostly).
  4. ego is an imaginary thing. a flower does not need an ego to survive, even though it has its own thorns to help it. if there is hunger, there will be search for food. if there is thirst, there will be search for water. if there is need to urinate, there will be search for a place to pee and so on. you're not a thing experiencing life. you're LIFE ITSELF experiencing its own mysteries.
  5. sometimes i use this: https://www.random.org/
  6. here, a more exciting exercise... bob asks ana if she's wearing underwear. ana answers: is ana using underwear?
  7. oh c'mon. those are pretty simple ones... a system of linear equations: { R + B = 11; R - B = 10 => { R = 10.5; B = 0.5 suppose lea is married => lea (married) watches richard (not married) => yes suppose lea is not married => jon (married) watches lea (not married) => yes the answer is yes regardless of lea's maritial status
  8. it means living accordingly to your true nature instead of experiencing useless suffering.
  9. @Outer the reward model is explicitly coded by humans and this is one of the spots where human responsibility comes into play. @Leo Gura the AI output is one thing. acting accordingly to it or giving the AI autonomy to act on its own is another level. this is another spot where human responsibility comes into play. blind and naive reward functions such as "maximize lifespan" or "maximize profit" should never shape an AI that's being trained in order to be embedded on a physical device. if you take a look on how those self-driving cars AI's are built, their rewards functions are extremely complex and come with several penalty rules, otherwise they would overfit.
  10. hi. i am an artificial intelligence researcher and engineer. an AI system is built to solve a problem for which solutions can be measured and compared. for instance, you can build an AI to stabilize a drone or to play mario world. AI systems are built for specific problems. in this sense, AI is more like a enhanced calculator. if an AI system ever harm a human being, it's because it was programmed to do so. the problem is not AI and it will never be. the problem human responsibility and human goals.
  11. @thehero it has nothing to do with external negative energies nor any kind of esoterism. it's your mind that's making the association. @Genghis Khan's tips are legit.
  12. @Anton Rogachevski it's useful if it motivates you to transcend it. otherwise it's just a waste of energy.
  13. jordan peterson has legitimately helped thousands of people with his teachings. he teaches about responsibility. he teaches about the attitude of facing emotional struggles and healing relationships. he speaks firmly so those who are lost in thoughts can finally build trust in a set of principles to extinguish the chaos from their lives. jordan peterson has his own struggles. he's beaten alcoholism and as far as i know he still takes antidepressants. he's the typical example of a human being who felt completely lost until he was able to straighten his habits and moral concepts. let the man be the man. and let those who resonate with him straighten their lives as well. so if you say "uh, oh, his concepts about reality are too narrow!", then stop being hypocritical! you're being attached to concepts as well
  14. @Andreas trying to define Reality is certainly not turquoise.
  15. just dropping it here.
  16. these values are incompatible with such a restrict filter. are you able to embody those or are you just being hypocritical?
  17. "deep enough" is too strong for a book. but it's certainly very deep for a book.
  18. it's a trap. living in awe is the only option. it's an unsolvable mystery.
  19. @VictorB02 say what you feel and explain why you want to leave the group in a polite way. then leave the group. extra instructions: uninstall snapchat from your device.
  20. i know @kieranperez is a runner as well.
  21. there is no ego. there's only True Self. when you say i, it's Life itself saying i. existential struggle is useless. focus on living healthily instead.
