Direct experience is self-validating: it reveals and validates what's true, so that is what we should be after, not fantasy.

UnbornTao replied to Barna's topic in Spirituality, Consciousness, Awakening, Mysticism, Meditation, God
@Barna the entire point of this work is direct experience. Leo has presumably had many awakenings (direct consciousness of one's nature). So it isn't a belief for him, if he's to be trusted. Besides, I hear tell that consciousness is absolute, hence not limited to the brain. You seem to be very grounded in the mainstream materialist scientific paradigm of reality. Open up. Maybe that's an assumption (and a mistaken one at that). That's why we contemplate. -

That's probably your arrogance speaking. Find ways to radically open up. Perhaps uncognized assumptions is the best place for you to look into at this point. Contemplating reality humbles you. It should increase the sense of mystery. If your capacity for wonder is diminishing, then you need to open up even more. Question your beliefs. Are you absolutely certain of what you and life is? Can you say with confidence that there's nothing left about reality for you to become conscious of? -

Some nootropics can help memory. Research what those are. Optimizing your brain in general is useful for this purpose. Memorizing becomes effortless or at least much easier when you like what you're doing. If it were boring, you would have to force yourself to do it, which would be less effective. Invest more time into the activity or field of your choice. Throw yourself into it. Keep your brain engaged. This focus clears out your daily life of distractions and other things that subtly hold your brain down. This in turn frees up space for a more effortless kind of memorization to occur. Like a muscle, it has to be improved through practice. Doing math, coding, or learning a new language are among the things that can help.

Was going to say the same as your first two paragraphs. A distinction some fail to make. At least from my interpretation of what you said. -

Could be. I haven't really looked into anxiety and depression yet. Exactly. I think the best option is, before putting your attention on eliminating anxiety, you let it be there, completely. That way, contemplating its nature, and thus transcending it, becomes a possibility. What is the anxiety doing? First I would need to know what life really is. Who knows? Maybe suffering isn't inherent. After all, legend tells Gautama Buddha became free of it. For now, the way I see it, pain is fundamental because of the body (nervous system, etc), maybe suffering not so much. I don't know about animals and emotions. Their process may be rudimentary compared to ours. What you say could be a projection. Those are all emotions -- I don't see why you'd want to distinguish between natural and unnatural emotions. No emotion is negative by itself so whenever an emotion is experienced it should be accepted and felt completely, without necessarily having to act it out. -

A lot of our suffering is unnecessarily created by us. It is there because it serves a purpose that is uncognized by us. For example, anger is a manipulation that helps us cover a sense of hurt. It is a form of self-inflicted suffering. -

I mean, biologically speaking, the distinction we refer to as woman is the one who can get pregnant. If we're talking gender, that's up to society and the individual. But of course the biological option is that only "females" get pregnant. Call it that or by any other name. A lion or a "male" ape can't get pregnant as far as I know. -
First look your attitude and disposition. Try to "hold the room". As long as you're in a funny, natural, spontaneous vibe, you can talk about almost any kind of shit you want. Humor is silly. Observe details on the environment. Make up something interesting.

Math didn't exist until humans began interpreting reality, creating abstractions, etc. Math isn't existential. A human had to create it. Without a human mind to conceptualize, math doesn't exist. Find the number 2 or +. Symbols themselves are inventions. Where do you find math outside of the context and distinctions of mind? -
UnbornTao replied to Yali's topic in Spirituality, Consciousness, Awakening, Mysticism, Meditation, God
Invented, like mind itself. Trees don't care. Human organs for example are what allow for ways of perceiving and making sense of sensory data. The senses themselves are inventions -- biological ones. The only way that 1+1=2 is the mind interpreting reality in such a way as to make that possible. Who decided to take what's assumed to be an object and add it to another? Reality is; we do things with it -- interpreting, perceiving, making sense, judging, etc. Before humans, math didn't exist. A human body was required to perceive, interpret, and make sense. It's a tool or language. -
Addictions are emotional, not rational. That's why you can't think your way out of them no matter how illogical the behavior seems to be.

We might as well look into the matter now so that we're better prepared for when it happens.

I have not, thank you.

I think Leo was simply trying to demistify enlightenment. His use of the word "science" in this case may be like that of a methodology, something real and tangible, not just a spiritual fantasy or abstract notion. In the same way that it could be said "cooking as a science" or some such. What that example refers to is up for grabs (using sophisticated science equipment for innovative cooking?). It's just a flexible use of the word, for rethoric purposes perhaps. Not be confused with math or physics -- "real", established science. Another example: soccer as an art. It isn't really an artform in the conventional sense although some see it that way. -

You seem to hold direct consciousness as impossible, as most of society. Many seemingly sincere people, both contemporary and ancient, have said that enlightenment is possible. What would be all the fuss about, then? You are you, consciousness of this is what's needed. Intellect, second-guessing and looking for validation isn't helpful. Think of it as seeing your nose. Your mind ignores it but it is there. In short, it is possible for everyone. Start by simply considering the possibility. -

You sound like Leo. You also may have developed an attachment to his teachings. This clouds one's investigations even if just in subtle ways. Just saying that it is useful to detach oneself from other's communications. -
Pursuing happiness is an assessment of unhappiness. The search itself is based on its lack. Stop pursuing happiness. Be happy instead.

Okay, then. Nice observations.

@AminB501 obviously this is no justification, but it's useful to remember that he has asperger. From my experience, sometimes you can come off as brusque or cold. This may influence his already established manipulative tactics. He may also feel like shit, I wonder how much he sleeps.

@Jodistrict @zurew yes, but they're different goals. Pursuing awakening can have physiological and emotional benefits, but these are side effects. And pursuing healing won't make you enlightened, although it can help you be more loving, etc. which could be considered as spiritually elevating. Weird phrase

Are temporary things easily achievable in contrast to the perennial, atemporal or timeless? What's instantly achievable is often temporary. The longer the time horizon, the harder it is to get. Good things require development over time: Gratification vs satisfaction Pleasure vs happiness Distraction vs focus Indulgence vs patience
