Considering your understanding of determinist reality you can think of it as a way of mapping the extrapolation of events out from the time of your birth. By taking a still shot of the placements at the time a creature takes their its breath it is less difficult than you would think to judge the results of each aspect of its life.
It's perhaps a little less mystical or magical than you would think. Now, the stigmas are endless due to skewed western interpretation followed by it's pop-culturalization but the base practice still exists in a relatively pure form.
