  13. Lyrics [Intro / Verse 1] Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall She sees the bartender in a pool of blood Cries out, “My God, they killed them all!” [Chorus] Here comes the story of the Hurricane The man the authorities came to blame For something that he never done Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world [Verse 2] Three bodies lyin' there, does Patty see And another man named Bello, moving around mysteriously “I didn’t do it,” he says, and he throws up his hands “I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand [Chorus] I saw them leaving,” he says, and he stops “One of us had better call up the cops” And so Patty calls the cops, and they arrive on the scene With their red lights flashin' in the hot New Jersey night [Verse 3] Meanwhile, far away in another part of town Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around Number one contender for the middleweight crown Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down [Chorus] When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road Just like the time before and the time before that In Paterson that’s just the way things go If you’re black, you might as well not show up on the street Unless you want to draw the heat [Verse 4] Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around He said, “I saw two men running out, they looked like middleweights They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates” [Chorus] And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head Cop said, “Wait a minute, boys, this one’s not dead” So they took him to the infirmary And though this man could hardly see They told him he could identify the guilty men [Verse 5] Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in They take him to the hospital and they brought him upstairs The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye Say, “Why did you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!” [Chorus] Here’s the story of the Hurricane The man the authorities came to blame For something that he never done Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world [Verse 6] Four months later, the ghettos are in flame Rubin’s in South America, fighting for his name While Arthur Dexter Bradley’s still in the robbery game And the cops are putting the screws to him Lookin' for somebody to blame [Chorus] “Remember that murder that happened in a bar?” “Remember you said you saw the getaway car?” “You think you’d like to play ball with the law?” “Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw Running that night?” “Don’t forget that you are white” [Verse 7] Arthur Dexter Bradley said, “I’m really not sure” The cops said, “A poor boy like you could use a break We got you for the motel job, and we’re talking to your friend Bello Now you don’t want to have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow [Chorus] You’ll be doing society a favor That son of a bitch is brave and gettin' braver We want to put his ass in stir We want to pin this triple murder On him He ain’t no Gentleman Jim” [Verse 8] Rubin could take a man out with just one punch But he never did like to talk about it all that much "It’s my work", he’d say, "and I do it for pay" "And when it’s over I’d just as soon go on my way" [Chorus] Up to some paradise Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice And ride a horse along a trail But then they took him to the jailhouse Where they try to turn a man into a mouse [Verse 9] All of Rubin’s cards were marked in advance The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance The judge made Rubin’s witnesses drunkards from the slums To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum [Chorus] And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigga No one doubted that he pulled the trigger And though they could not produce the gun The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed And the all-white jury agreed [Verse 10] Rubin Carter was falsely tried The crime was murder “one”, guess who testified? Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride [Chorus] How can the life of such a man Be in the palm of some fool’s hand? To see him obviously framed Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed To live in a land where justice is a game [Verse 11] Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties Are free to drink Martinis, and watch the sun rise While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell An innocent man in a living hell [Chorus / Outro] Yes that’s the story of the Hurricane But it won’t be over till they clear his name And give him back the time he’s done Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world
  14. From Eye Of the Hurricane, My Path From Darkness To Freedom - Dr. Rubin Carter with Ken Klonsky This book is by Rubin Carter who was falsely imprisoned for 20 years for a triple murder he did not commit. Page 125 From that Very cell, I remembered the biblical story about King Solomon, who had a dream in which God came to him and told him, “Ask me for anything and I will give it to you.” And King Solomon answered, “I am but a little child. I know not how to go out or to come in, but I am a servant of thy people. Give me, therefore, an understanding heart that I may judge thy people wisely and fairly.” And God Said, “Because you did not ask for the lives of your enemies, did not ask for longevity, did not ask for riches, because you asked for only this one thing, understanding, I will give you understanding. There will be none wiser than you on this earth.” In remembering this story from my childhood, I was always impressed by King Soloman’s wisdom and humility. As a judge, he wanted to be wise and fair, but he also understood how difficult such a task would be. He seemed to care little for the things most other people lived for. Most important, King Solomon made me understand that I can still be a man and yet not seek revenge for the wrongs that been done to me. This may be a foreign idea to the mythology of imperial countries or in the minds of religious fanatics, but it now took root in me.
  15. I highly recommend people read this book. It’s very in line with any other spiritual teaching. Rubin’s life is extremely inspiring and I think learning about it, and the problems associated with false imprisonment of the innocent is a huge eye opener. He talks not only about freeing himself from prison, but freeing his mind from the sleep of our toxic unconscious society. It also gets you to understand the importance of truth. The book dove tails nicely with many of Leo’s teachings on truth, what is the devil, what is corruption, etc
  16. You are enough
  17. Most (all) mods have a higher degree of discernment, or at least a degree of discernment enough they can be a mod. Though, mods are not intended to be perfect. Actually, I find the hardest thing in being a mod is when taking action to moderate. I am still developing my discernment in this regard. What is the ideal role mode for the forum? What is enjoying the forum for me? What is the correct way to discipline/ moderate people going against the guidelines? Leo has things written, but also he expects us to use our discernment. It’s not easy.
  18. @ivankiss I fell into traps myself. Though, admittedly my own doing. When you step into the dark, you’re likely to trip until your eyes adjust to the light. Then you learn to walk with your head held high. “Growing up in some strange storm, nobodies cold nobodies warm. I went out into the night, I went out to find some light Shadows jumping all over the wall some of them big, some of them small I went out into the night I went out to pick a fight with anyone!!” The forum has toxicity, actually because it’s a personal development forum ironically. We are still immature largely and yes, we live in a toxic culture. “When the power is out in the heart of man take it from your heart PUT IT IN HOUR HAND!!!”
  19. @ivankiss Such is the internet. Such is earth. Personal development and spirituality is very dangerous. People should be very careful here and anywhere else. But, overall the conversations here seem to be decent. Relatively. It’s in the guidelines that nothing that is said here is to be taken as authority. You need to think for yourself, and take Responsibility for your life at the end of the day.
  20. @ivankiss It’s okay. You guys being critical of us is part of the intelligence behind improving the forum. We will not likely make everyone happy. It’s also important to have proper expectations of a forum. It’s a casual place, not a temple
  21. @ivankiss Yeah well, in the social political realm a good “whatever” is not so easily measured as is a pilot. Everyone has an opinion and an asshole. You are taking for granted how well the forum is running.
  22. Hi, spreading hate goes against the forum guidelines. This is a verbal warning to @Tudo. I have locked the thread. What is not allowed: Guidelines Hate speech: racism,
  23. @ivankiss I guess it depends. Sorry if I derailed your thread a bit as well. For me, a sense of humour goes a long way. Particularly in this thread I had a lot of fun. @Princess Arabia I think had fun as well. Overall, the mods are pretty good. We are just people like you at the end of the day. Imperfect, working on ourselves, well intentioned. These are some of the best mods we have had. I get compliments every day. People message me they say, “Thought Art, these are really the best mods we’ve ever had”. It’s amazing really. Some of the best mods in the history of the forum. People pleasing isn’t in the mod guide book.
