I recently had a similar conversation with myself about prayer. I was raised Baptist so my first obstacle was realizing that I was not communicating with another entity; I was communicating with myself (in other words, building a line of communication to my unconscious). So, I started praying again and I gotta say, I've noticed anecdotal success in a matter of days. I've prayed for answers and cognitive solutions and I've received them. So I'm gonna keep with it!
