Israel has used the Holocaust card way too much to get away with heinous bullshit virtually no other country would get away with. The Holocaust was terrible but it doesn’t give a nation free rein to rewrite human rights, international law, factual evidence or just basic fucking history at will. Palestinians, Lebanese, Iranians etc are all suffering under their unhinged quest for regional hegemony and the creation of “Greater Israel” in complete violation of international law, human decency, or common sense. What confuses me about Tate is how he seems to believe he could get away with rape, sex trafficking, violent abuse etc for years without any sort of repercussion whatsoever. Man, as someone of Greek background this movie is gonna be so ass. Not because the movie itself will be bad (I’m not gonna see it so idk how it’ll be artistically) but because it’s gonna convince a whole bunch of people that Odysseus and Penelope were a bunch of rich WASPs from New England and not the swarthy Mediterranean people they historically were. Greeks (and Turks, and Lebanese etc) have historically been treated poorly in the West and the lack of inclusion in a movie based off our own myths is gonna do a lot to erase us from the public consciousness. It’s like, the white guys love our history but then pretend we don’t exist, which one is it?

I think my biggest problem with America is that it wants to be an empire without any of the responsibility. Usually empires use resources from other countries to provide for their population back at home (think of the grain dole in Ancient Rome), but America can’t even bring itself to give its own citizens healthcare. Then look at foreign policy. It’s true all empires engage in various forms of massacres, wars of conquests etc from time to time, but more often then not they will then try to provide laws, infrastructure etc to their conquered provinces (even if only out of an attempt to display their own superiority.) When the British conquered India, for instance, they built railways, public offices, etc. Compare this to America in Iraq and Afghanistan for instance, where the Americans seemed to be content with letting the countries fall to chaos outside of a few “green zones” in the capital cities. Then there’s the issue of refusing to integrate conquered populations - say what you will about the British for instance, but they let Indians get educated in Britain, serve in their military, etc. Compare this to how Americans, even after invading Iraq and Afghanistan, still saw these people are “subhuman terrorists” they wanted nothing to do with, whilst effectively being in control of those countries. When America withdrew from Afghanistan in 2022 hundreds (if not thousands) of friendly Afghan citizens who helped the western nations were left behind (often at great risk to their safety), and calls to bring them over to the US itself were rejected for not wanting to bring more “brown people” into their country. If you want global influence, that comes with global responsibility, which America seems both unable and unwilling to accept. I feel like people would be a lot less harsh if America seemed to genuinely be interested in at least attempting to uplift other countries (as well as their own), but the track record over the past several decades has soured too many people on this. That’s my take anyway.

@Leo Gura yeah, I think it basically comes down to economics. Even just your average middle class American or Brit is living a lifestyle that would be in the top 1% of most third world countries, so in that situation it’s basically inevitable that people from those countries will do anything that they can to try and have a chance at their life. If you’re a young engineering student from Senegal for instance, are you going to put up with rampant corruption, pollution, crime, unemployment etc in your home country, or are you going to take a shot at earning 50x more than you ever could by moving to the West, even if you have to put up with shitty pay, racism, long work hours, etc? Realistically the only way to reduce global migration is to reduce global inequality, but that takes a degree of foresight and cooperation that most politicians and business people aren’t prepared to do. Not to mention, like you said, rich countries like having poor immigrants come in and do the backbreaking labour they’re not prepared to do themselves, even if it ends up changing the culture / demographics overtime. Obviously there’s more to it than that (enclaves vs assimilation, religious tensions, etc) but so long as the economic factor isn’t addressed all the other points are just superficial grievances IMO. Wealth and security is the primary driver for so much of human activity.
