My best friend in middle school was Persian. His father was a very strict authoritarian husband and father who felt he had the right to dominate everyone in the family. Here's how it played out: After much drama and nasty fighting, his wife divorced him, took his mansion and the children. And to this day my best friend hates his father and regards him as an authoritarian prick.

One of my best friends in high school was Canadian, grew up in a nice household similar to me. Went to the same good school as me. He was sane and normal. But then in high school he got mixed up with drugs and the wrong people. He became a drug dealer. Around age 25 his life turned so bad he shot himself in the head.
A good household is no safeguard from drugs or criminal behavior.

When I was in full God-mode one time, I looked at a candle on my countertop and said, "Okay, let's make this thing levitate." And I tried to do the whole Jedi force levitate thing on it. You can't live by the opinions of your parents. It is your responsibility to build a life and career for yourself. You cannot build a career at things you're bad at. Find what you are good at. You won't please your parents by doing things you're bad at.
