  1. question for well dressed people: how did you learn to dress better? What resources/books/sites did you use? I really want to look and dress better and develop a style that suits me. Problem is right now I'm not stylish at all and I have no idea where to start. I'm male btw.
  2. Not mine, but something I read in a youtube comment section that suddenly made me doubt my veganism (I've only started two days ago): Any thoughts on this? (Vegans please read) Ok, so here is my complete thesis into why being Vegan is a flawed concept (side note - I have studied nutrition at masters level at a top Uk uni, i've also studied dietary history & evolutionary biology) I apologise if this gets a bit lengthy. Veganism is a deeply flawed concept, both environmentally & dietarily and future generation will laugh at this stupid diet, why? 1) Veganism is a flawed concept. Why? Vegans, amongst other reasons, don't eat animal products to avoid the death of animals. But agriculture destroys more animals and the environment more than any other method. Growing tropical fruits destroys rain forests, shipped from across the planet. Is this really sustainable? A single cow can feed a family for a year if frozen correctly. Vegan ruins the environment more than ANY OTHER DIET! 2) Guess what? Over 70% of the foods we eat today did not exist before the industrial revolution. From an evolutionary perspective, there is simply no way for our bodies to know what to do with these “foods” (which, as we all know, aren’t real food at all) If you're from Europe, is it preferable in your genetic makeup to eat bananas that grow in the rainforest???? 3) Broken down by nutrient ratios, what we feed cattle (that isn't grass fed/pasteurised) to “fatten them up” is almost identical to the government-sanctioned food pyramid for a “healthy” diet! Is it any wonder we are in the middle of an obesity epidemic?? 4) It was only when we started eating animal foods/fish that our brains doubled in size, this is a proven scientific fact, allowing for the modern human and all our advances. Interesting irony that the very capacity for making an argument for a plant-based diet comes from our ancestors’ move away from a plant-based diet! Ah, evolution wins EVERY time!!!!!!!!! 5) A recent Australian study was done with a group of aborigine who had grown up in a traditional hunter gatherer environments, and then moved into urban environments where they adopted modern diets. Alas, lifestyles and (unsurprisingly) health concerns such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease arose. They returned to the outback & their hunter gatherer ways for a seven week period. They lost 25 pounds each and all their health markers (insulin resistance, blood pressure, cholesterol levels ect) normalised. Red meat, poultry, vegetables and seasonal fruits where plentiful for these men, I wonder what this study proves??? 6) Another interesting point, are humans digestive tracts designed to eat meat?? Vegans say no, other people with working brains say YES - it turns out that much differs among animals, the markers lay in the composition of the digestive tract! Animals have evolved digestive tracts and livers to transform diverse food inputs into the uniform set of nutrients that they need for optimal health. Herbivores have foregut organs such as rumens or hindgut chambers for fermenting carbohydrates, turning them into fats and volatile acids that can be used to manufacture fats. Carnivores have livers capable of turning protein into glucose and fat.The truth is that humans are omnivores, despite what some vegan proponents would have you believe. We function best eating BOTH animals and plant together!!!! (Great study - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10702160) 7) Guess what? Meat/fish is VERY nutritious!! Did you know, that high quality, unprocessed meat is among the most nutritious foods in the world?! A 100 gram portion (3.5 ounces) of raw ground beef contains large amounts of Vitamin B12, B3 (Niacin), B6, Iron, Zinc, Selenium and plenty of other vitamins and minerals (http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/beef-products/6193/2) Vitamin B12 is particularly important because it can not be obtained in ANY amount from plants (arguably some sea veggies contain small traces) Studies show that most vegans who don’t supplement with B12, 92% are deficient in this critical nutrient (http://www.nutritionj.com/content/9/1/10) Unprocessed meat is also loaded with healthy fats, but meat from grass-fed animals contains up to 5 times as much Omega-3 as meat from grain-fed animals!!!! (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18641180) But the nutrient composition of meat goes WAY beyond all the macro- and micronutrients that we are all familiar with! - CREATINE forms an energy reserve in the muscles and brain and is found only in animal foods. Vegetarians are deficient in creatine, leading to reduced physical and mental performance (http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=8207518) CARNOSINE functions as a powerful anti-oxidant and provides protection against many degenerative processes. Carnosine is only found in animal foods (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15872311) DHA and EPA are the active forms of Omega-3 in the human body and found primarily in animal foods. The body is inefficient at converting ALA (the plant form of Omega-3) to the active forms (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11083485) 8) Humans have been eating fish for millions of years, some cultures SURVIVE solely on fish and have zero disease. Studies show that regular consumption of fish fights Alzheimer's Polyunsaturated fatty acids found in many fish may prevent damage to brain cells. Eating fish can also dramatically reduce the risk of high blood pressure, which is linked with dementia. A French study of 2000 people showed that those who ate seafood at least once a week had a significantly lower risk of dementia over a seven-year period than those who didn't. Cancer A Swedish study of 6000 men over a 30-year period showed that those who didn't eat any fish had between double and treble the risk of developing prostate cancer, compared to those who ate moderate or large amounts. Shellfish, such as crab and lobster, also contains selenium, thought to have cancer-fighting properties. Depression It's been reported that fish can help to ease depression. Again, it's down to omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to raise levels of the brain chemical serotonin. Arthritis Population groups that eat a lot of fish - Inuits in Greenland, for example - have low rates of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Studies have also shown fish oils to be useful in relieving the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Social benefits According to research carried out in Mauritius, children given lots of fish from the age of three are less likely to have criminal records by the time they reach 23. EVEN Skin According to dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, author of The Perricone Prescription, a salmon-packed diet can help smooth out age lines. 9) TESTING - The Vegan diet is rather new in terms of modern human diets. We haven't tested the vegan diet long term, I would bet all the money in the world in 10 years we will not be eating vegan. We will know the dangers & this stupid method of eating will be obsolete. 10) This idiot does not know anything about nutrition. Eating 50 bananas a day like some vegans do is VERY bad for you, thats a lot of fructose/potassium and your organs will suffer. They come from a eating disorder background and obviously sits around all day obsessing over diet and body, that alone is not healthy. You may argue some vegans look in good shape, so would you if you worked out all day like most do?
  3. Hello everyone, This gets a bit heavy but I didn't know where else to post this, I'll probably put it on reddit too. I'm an 18 year old male. Normally I should be excited for the life ahead and all its possibilities. My situation is a bit different. Very soon, I will take my own life. I know the response would be to man up and stop being a victim, which is all good and well when you actually have some control over your circumstances which I have not. Suicide in my case is not a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Let me explain. There are a million things not going right in my life right now. I'm severley depressed and have been for years now. Psychologists and therapists don't help at all. And no I'll never take drugs. I've seen how they changed my mothers personality and I'd rather die than live like that. And I'm not depressed bc of a brain imbalance, I'm depressed bc of the circumstances. However I'm convinced I could fix this if only my circumstances changed. I have extreme social anxiety and few friends. I have a binge eating disorder. My stomach hurts often because of overeating and then dieting/fasting. My dads an alcoholic who has no empathy at all for me. He also is in the beginning stages of Alzheimers (no one knows this; I recognized the symptoms but haven't told anyone). My mom is a wreck and emotionally unstable as well. I'm starting to develop an alcohol problem as well. However I'm convinced I can solve all of the above. My main reason is embarrasing and unsolvable. 4 years ago (when i was 14) I contracted a UTI. I had extreme pain during urination, had frequent urges and had extreme pain during ejaculation. So just go to the doctor and get it fixed, right? Well I did. I went to my GP maybe 12 times in the span of 2 years? He prescribed me all kinds of things (antibiotics, drugs, ...) but nothing helped. Then I went to two urologists. I did every test imaginable, from urine testing to checking inside my bladder with a camera. Again I took lots of different medications for months on end. Nothing helped. At this Point I started becoming extremely desperate. I could live with the urination pain but the worst part of all is the fact that ejaculating hurts so much. I'll never be able to have sex like this. At this point I also started looking into other doctors. I did homeopathy (a scam). Didn't help. I went to a psychologist and a psychiatrist. They told me I should learn to live with this. Fuck that. I went to a herb specialist. Didn't help. I went to a chiropractor. Didn't help. I took supplements that are supposed to kill the pain. Didn't help. I went to a hypnotherapist. Didn't help. I tried affirmations, visualizations, meditation. Didn't help. I'm now 18 and in my first year of college. During every class I have to leave the room with more than a hundred people several times just to go to the bathroom. It's extremely embarrasing. The pain is still there. Nothing. Fucking. Helps. All my friends are getting their lives started and are getting laid and while I'm happy for them, the realisation has now dawned on me that I will never experience this. If it weren't for this problem I would have been able to solve all the rest. I'm failing college as well because I just can't handle this anymore. I'm at my wits end. Therefore I have decided to kill myself the next time my parents are out of town for a night. I'm still researching on what the most painless method is, but aftre putting on some music I'll probably just fill the bathtub, get in and slit my wrists. I still don't know what the meaning of this existence is and why so many people have to suffer so much. I never chose to start this life, but I can choose to end it. I have come to the conclusion that God can't be good. Even if all this suffering is just ego, it's still very real for the people who live through it. Maybe there is an afterlife. I hope its better than this. I don't know why I wrote this or what kind of a response I should expect. Just why not i guess. To anyone reading this, I wish you all the best in life.
  4. I've been vegan for a month now and it's going great. The next step for me is eliminating transfats and high fructose corn syrup from my diet. Problem is that this is in almost everything! Even almondmilk has this, and so much other stuff as well. I don't know any replacements, so where does everyone on this forum buy his food?
  5. @ajasatya How would you know this? There is no evidence. @Leo Gura Can I get your opinion? I don't know what else to do in my situation.
  6. Hello everyone, Some time ago I realized that I still have a youtube account from years ago, when I was in my early teens. It contains some extremely embarassing (cringy) old videos of mine that I need to have deleted asap. If anyone sees these that would be very disastrous. The problem, however, is that because the account is so old, I have no idea whatsoever what the password is or the emailadress. This means I cannot acces the account and delete the videos mentioned. Has anyone faced a similar situation? What actions can I take to get out of this situation?
  7. @Annie what did you do to fix your gut?
  8. @ChimpBrain Flawed video imo:
  9. So far I've heard very conflicting opinions about this. Any books or people that you recommend I look into?
  10. @Leo Gura Could you share some of your sources? I'm fascinated about this and agree with you, but I'd like to read some more about it
  11. I would love this to be true. I really do. But sadly I think it is just a human bias we have. There's a good chance we're overly optimistic by saying this will happen in 2035, just so we can kid ourselves into believing we'll live forever. Ray Kurzweil strikes me as someone who is terrified of death and can't seem to accept it, so he makes these impossible estimates. He's also not very well respected by his colleges. Nevertheless, there are some very smart people and intellectuals that appear to buy into this theory (Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking come to mind). Also Sam harris talks about this here: A lot of smart people also seem to dismiss it (Chomsky etc,...) I've also heard from people with master in AI that it might never happen, and certainly not anytime soon. Here's a set of counterarguments that it will happen so soon (or ever): I wish this was true as much as the next person, but it appears to be untrue.
  12. Let's not forget about arguably the most powerful technique: hypnosis I did this and had great results for 2 days and then I slacked off due to an unrelated depression. Have tried it since but failed to reach the same deep levels consistently. I hope to learn more about this, and would appreciate it if anyone knew some course/books... I also went to a certified hypnotherapist but she was a hack.
  13. hello guys, I've got my exams coming up. They begin next week and I haven't even started yet. The reason is because I've had a severe depression the last year and it has suddenly gotten worse. I can't even make myself study. Yesterday I had my first panic attack ever, I just lay on my couch hyperventilating, shaking, crying and even a sense of physical pain for at least an hour. My thoughts are getting more stupid and darker. I need to pass these exams or I will have to redo my year which would destroy me mentally, I just want to be done with school.
  14. @Piotr @Natasha I just found out I passed all my exams! Your advice/videos helped me and I just wanted to say thank you! The depression and panic attacks aren't over but at least I'm finally done with school.
  15. Doesn't it damage your teeth?
  16. @Natasha problem is I think I really don't have time to make my own milk; how long does it take on average for you? And do you know some youtube channels you were talking about?
  17. I did it for an hour once, but I plan to shatter that record after my exams. Only thing was that my legs were insanely numb. The discipline I gained from it is worth it tho. Now I try to do 20min a day. How long do you do strond determination sitting?
  18. Is Leo's list of 140 favorite books included in the life purpose course? Can anyone that bought it tell me this?
  19. @JevinR What do you think of the course? Worth the price?
  20. I'm definitely buying the life purpose course, I am just hesitant about the book list. It just seems such a weird thing to give money to just a list. @Ray @JevinR Did any of you happen to buy the list?
  21. @Natasha Thanks for the video. It's always nice to hear Eckhart Tolle's perspective on my problems. It calmed me down a bit. I still have problems concentrating because I am tired all time. @Piotr good advice, I actually got a bit of work done, however a lot less than I should be doing now and I'm still afraid won't make it that video was pretty funny btw.
  22. Is this dangerous? I really want to do cross legged strong determination sitting because I have noticed it improves my discipline immensely in all areas of life. However I wonder if it is dangerous to sit for hour(s) with sleeping legs. Has anyone had any experience with this?
  23. That's what I read as well but I just don't feel safe stopping the blood to my legs for an hour each day. It's a shame, I did it for 3 days and my self discipline skyrocketed. May I ask how you manage to avoid this?
  24. So - and I know a lot of you are having the same problem - I have always been struggling with installing new habits. Wether it is reading, working on my dreams, studying, eating healthier, cold showers, etc, everytime I try to install one I either fail completely or it works for a while; untill laziness kicks in and it doesn't. Commitment is recommitment so I am not giving up. However it has been like this ever since I found out about self help and that was two years ago. I have made little progress and it is quite frustrating. Since social encouragement is very motivating but so many of us are surrounded by toxic/unambitious people that aren't initiated into self help I thought we might be able to use each other. So the other day I came up with an idea to use this forum to install habits more efficiently. Everyone that wants to join comments in this thread what habit they'd like to install. Everyday they succesfully follow through with their intentions, they post that and everyone else in the thread must give that person a thumbs up (triggers dopamine in brain). If they fail, then they don't recieve a thumbs up, but encouragement. What do you think? Is this too complicated? I haven't really thaught about this a lot, if anyone has a better idea to use each other for motivation please tell us.
  25. I'm doing this. addictions: overeating, laziness, internet, negativity meditation: Do nothing + strong determination sitting simultaneously (1h) Day 1 Feelings Felt physiologically: I had to move several times because my feet turned blue. I'm using a chair next time. feelings felt psychologically: boredom and pain. I often found myself slipping away into fantasy and I couldn't control it. How Do You Feel After Your Session?: a bit dissapointed that I didnt do it properly. some insights: I've been lying to myself about not being able to control my eating or not being able to study.
