Exploiting other countries is a bad strategy these days as it quickly boomerangs. We saw this with the Iraq war, and now we're seeing it with Putin's war. These days a country does not need to exploit anyone to do well for itself. The US and Russia both made themselves weaker with frivolous wars.

US had its eyes set on Iraqi oil. Moreover, Crimea used to be part of Russia. So it makes far more sense than invading Iraq.
